This article describes the people of Philadephia's reaction to 100 freed slaves
being brought to into their territory. The author, himself is against the abolition movement
and diputes that slaves, take away jobs from white americans.
Analysis
This newspaper article was written during the civil war and is very candid. What I found shocking was the types of content that was allowed to be published. Some of the comments made by the author were offensive. Although, at this period in history, I can understand why it was allowed to be published. At this point slaves were considered property, and were not accounted for as citizens of the U.S., during this time in the Civil War. This is why blacks were spoken about so freely. Lincoln had enacted the Confiscation Act which declared all slaves used for "insurrectionary" purposes were freed. Many blacks enlisted in the navy, and helped fight in the war. Before this, there was sectional conflicts dealing with reasons for why the war was being fought. Americans and other immigrants like the Irish complained that the war was being fought to end slavery, and as a result, the freed slaves would take over jobs that white americans held."We do not want them here, to throw our white laboring population out of employment, to steal from our Farmers and to fill our Poor Houses and Prisons." This newspaper article, describing this worries of the citizens of PA, is very bias. Analysis
WHat I found suprising about this phootograph was how cramped, and dirty the living condtions were in the forts. Some dominant features in this image are the battle forts. I know that during this time during the civil war, new battle tactics were being used. Battle forts were one of the. Now they found that forts worked better than running out in open land to fire attacks, which was a lot more dangerous. I also noticed a rifle, in the picture which was also a new battle tactic. Better weapons made battle strategies more effective. The main message of the song is that how the young men of the Union are fighting for our country. The song seems to evoke a somber or sad feeling, but also hopeful. The song lyrics say that the men fighting in the war are just boys.The author of the song speaks about the sacrifices the Union has to make to keep our country as one whole. Summary
This is a letter written by a soldier during the Civil War. In it, he describes his journey from Louisiana to Richmond, VA. He speks about previous battles, upcoming battle plans, and conditons on camp.
Analysis
After reading this letter, I found it interesting that the soldiers were mostly optimistic. The writer, L. Luckett is patriotic and is supportive of war. The letter was wriiten from the perspective of a the northern battle tactics. In Luckett's letter to Alexander Staurt he also mentions how the women play a significant role in the war. During the Civil War, women did begin taking on greater parts, like serving as nurses on the battlefield or filling job postions that were left by the men. In the letter he describes othe ways of how women were invovled."I hope our patriotic women may be able to clothe our whole army with woolens for the winter--it would be an honor..." Luckett also speaks about how the morale was high. The battle of Manassa had been recently fought, followed by the Battle of Wilson's Creek. At the Battle of Wilson's Creek the North won, and after were able to admit it as a a state (West Virginia).
